The Parish Registers of St Mary’s Church, Goudhurst start in November 1558. During the 1930s the former Goudhurst Village History Society undertook the monumental task of transcribing and indexing these registers. Between 2012 and 2013 members of the current Local History Society transferred the information to computer.

The transcripts cover the following dates:

  • Baptisms:             November 1558 – April 1929
  • Marriages:            November 1558 – June 1929
  • Burials:                 November 1558 – September 1938

The Society does not have access to any registers since these dates.

Abbreviations:

b/b = base born;
BWHS = baptised at Winchet Hill School. The school was licensed as a “Mission Church” on 4th April 1873. The reason for this was specifically “for the convenience of the inhabitants residing at a distance from the Parish Church” thus making it possible for families living nearby to have their children baptised there.
illeg = illegitimate;
P = poor;
pb = privately baptised. Babies were privately baptised when they were considered to be sickly at birth and therefore unlikely to survive for long
RIC = Date child was received into the congregation. This relates to a child who had previously been privately baptised and survived – hence a second date, which may have been a completely separate entry, or simply a footnote at the bottom of the page.
s/w = single woman
